What is the SOLegalNG FREE Online CGPA Calculator?

The SOLegalNG GPA Calculator is designed to take the stress out of the math, so you can focus on the studying. It’s fast, accurate, and works perfectly for both the standard 5.0 grading system (common in Nigerian universities) and the 4.0 US-style system.

Wait, What is GPA and CGPA?
Before you start punching in numbers, here is a quick breakdown of what we are calculating:

GPA (Grade Point Average):

This is your performance scorecard for a single semester. It takes the grades you got in every course (A, B, C...) and weights them against the credit units to give you one number that represents how well you did that term.

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average):

This is the big picture! Your CGPA combines the results of all your semesters together. This is the number that usually determines your final degree classification (First Class, Second Class Upper, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about calculating your CGPA online as a Nigerian Student.

No, the SOLegalNG’s Online CGPA Calculator is completely free and easy to use for all students across the world.

For accurate results, you need to insert all the courses you offer in a semester into each semester sections.

This depends entirely on your university!

  • 5.0 Scale: Select this if your school grades an ‘A’ as 5 points (Common in most Nigerian Federal and State Universities like UNILAG, UI, OAU, etc.).

  • 4.0 Scale: Select this if your school grades an ‘A’ as 4 points (Common in Private Universities, Polytechnics, and US/International schools).

  • Tip: You can switch scales using the button at the top if you selected the wrong one!

  • Check GPA: Click this to see your performance for just one specific semester (the one you are currently filling out).

  • Check CGPA: Click this after you have added all your semesters (e.g., Year 1 First Semester + Year 1 Second Semester). It calculates your cumulative standing across your entire time in school.

  • For your privacy, this calculator runs entirely in your browser and does not store your grades on our servers. If you refresh the page, your data will be reset. We recommend taking a screenshot of your results if you want to keep them!

  • Absolutely! You can keep clicking the “Add Next Semester” button as many times as you need. Whether you are in 100 Level or 500 Level, just keep adding semesters until you’ve input all your courses, then hit “Check CGPA.”

In most grading systems, a course must have a credit unit (usually between 1 and 6) to count towards your GPA. If a course is “0 units” or a non-credit course, you usually don’t need to input it here as it won’t affect your mathematical average.

GPA is calculated by multiplying your Grade Point (e.g., A=5) by the Course Unit to get the “Quality Point.” You do this for all courses, sum them up, and divide by the Total Credit Units registered. The SOLegalNG calculator automates this entire process for you instantly.

Generally, a CGPA of 4.50 to 5.00 is considered First Class Honours.

  • First Class: 4.50 – 5.00

  • Second Class Upper (2:1): 3.50 – 4.49

  • Second Class Lower (2:2): 2.40 – 3.49

  • Third Class: 1.50 – 2.39

Yes, it is mathematically possible, especially if you are in your earlier years (100-300 Level). The key is to secure high grades (A’s and B’s) in courses with higher credit units (3 or 4 units), as these carry more weight in the calculation. Use our “Add Semester” feature to simulate future grades and see exactly what you need to hit your target!

Yes, unfortunately. An ‘F’ usually carries 0 points but the course units are still counted in your total registration. This pulls your average down significantly. Retaking the course and passing it is the best way to fix this, though grading policies vary by institution regarding “waiving” the old grade.
